Age 21

Nickname Dodo

Grade 11

Name of School Coeur e Coeur

Walando goes by his nickname Dodo and it’s so common that he rarely hears his proper name. He is currently living with his mom but he spent most of his childhood living in a children’s home as his mom wasn’t able to pay for his education. Dodo has eight siblings and his dad isn’t involved in their family so his mom couldn’t handle it all on her own. When Dodo finished grade 6 his mom took him out of the children’s home. She figured he had learned the basics and he could start helping out at home.

Dodo had mixed feelings about going back home. He wanted to be with his mom but he also wanted to continue going to school. He worked hard to help his mom sell boiled chestnuts (a delicious Haitian snack!) in the afternoons and went to school in the morning. They were able to make it work for several years but tuition increases every year in High School and it’s no longer doable.

Helping Dodo finish High School, would mean so much to him. It would reward his decision to keep his education a priority and it would empower a shift in the culture to keep families together.
